Day 4 – Smooth Sailing

Labrador City to Happy Valley Goose Bay

I got up for an 8am start after an exhausting trip yesterday. The weather forecast predicts 70F and sunny - perfect for a day that should be “smooth sailing” on asphalt all the way to Happy Valley Goose Bay.
Packed up the bike, went for breakfast to come back to this:

Shortly after I met my riding companion to fill the tanks, stock up on snacks and water we head out on Highway 500 the real “Trans Labrador Highway”.

The sun came out and with the roads drying up we throttled up direction East somewhere above the 52nd Parallel.

We stopped when crossing the Churchill River to take some pictures, what used to be a strong river and water falls is now regulated by energy demands.

I had made room reservations for the trip till Labrador City and only found out later that the Goose Bay area is booked solid, the reason being the Muskrat Falls project – another Hydropower Dam being build and the town is filled with construction crews occupying all and every room. Luckily I ended up sharing a 2BR apartment rather than sleeping on the floor.

Sadly a guy working for the local government told me that local construction businesses don’t benefit that much from the project, large corporations have to finish on time and on budget and won’t take the risk relying on small companies, hence the town is full of workers from the neighboring provinces.

Another premier on the trip – Jungle Jim for dinner, something that you don’t have to travel for, but not that bad either.

A six-pack of Alexander Keith strapped to the bike and off to North West River for the night.
